In 1864 a grocer from Paisley, James Robertson and his wife, Marion, founded a preserve company. They began by selling marmalades, followed by a range of jams.

By 1903, when James Robertson & Sons Preserve Manufacturers Ltd was incorporated, the business had become the largest manufacturer of preserves in the world.

James and Marion had 11 children and 29 grandchildren. The current owner of James Robertson and Sons Preserve Manufacturers Ltd, James Robertson, is directly descended from Robert Robertson, their ninth child.
